    • This relationship is not proven and is included here based on the child that Leah had who she named Adoniram Warner Smith. At the time of conception, Adoniram (the senior) would have been widowed with children. As well, at this time, Leah had been away from her parent's home as a live in housekeeper. It makes logical sense that Adoniram may have acquired the services of Leah after his wife died. It also makes sense that Leah would have known Adoniram's first cousin, Philander who became a widower himself from his 2nd wife.

  • Notes
    • In a Horton Twp. letter a woman writes to another woman saying,"So Leah has decided to name her boy Nide after his father...". So it seems that Adoniram had the nickname Nide right from the start. However, I have no proof who the father "Nide" was. I can only suspect that it seems to coincidental that there was another Adoniram W. Smith who was a widower at the time of my grandfather's conception. The letter referred to earlier seems to indicate that he was named after his father.

Nide would have been a small boy when he and his mother went to live with Philander, a widower with four children of his own. Florence Eagle, daughter of Willard Smith, reports that her father always spoke very highly of Nide, and remembered when Leah and Nide first came to live with them.

Nide went to Rutherglen in 1903 to work for his step-brother, Willard. He married Alice, who lived not a mile east from Willard's farm, in 1904. In his marriage record, he is recorded as being a Methodist. They were married by the Rev. W.Y. Daykin.

In his obituary, Nide is described as contributing "much towards the development of farming in the Rutherglen area." He was a former member of the Bonfield Township Council, was tax collector for 28 years and served on local school boards. He was a chartered member of the Orange Lodge at Rutherglen. He was a farmer most of his life and attended St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Rutherglen. Much can be found in the Bonfield Township Meeting Minutes held at the Ontario Archives in Toronto regarding Adoniram Smith and changes he initiated.

A MEMORY OF WENDY V. SMITH

I only remember one story Grampa Smith told me, about a little girl that sat in front of him in school. He said their desks were the double desks with ink wells. The little girl in front wore pig-tails and had head lice. He said they used to fall from her head onto his desk and he and his desk buddy would try and knock them into the ink wells. Then I remember he looked away rather sadly and said, "I wonder whatever happened to her". I remember thinking, "Gosh, he must have liked her, lice and all!" Grampa must have been close to 90 then."
