  • Notes
    • Member of Freemasons. Entered 3rd Degree in 1954. No. 405 Mattawa

My father was born in the family home in Rutherglen. At his baptism, the minister was W. S. Watson (Lay Reader). He was confirmed at St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Rutherglen on 7th October, 1934 and also received first communion.

January 10, 1941, Dad had to enrol into militia training for the war. He was 5' 8", 150 lbs., brown eyes (his eyes were really hazel) and black hair. His regimental number was B529387. On June 30, 1942, he was called to more militia training and services within Canada, but he applied for postponement and it was granted. I think I remember Mom telling me that the reason he gave for postponement was that his father needed him on the farm.

After his wedding in 1943, a reception was held at his parents home. They "honeymooned" in North Bay. In and around 1959, he was the President of East Nipissing Plowmen's Association and he was also had a Membership Certificate into the Parry Sound District Livestock Co-operative Association (1953).

Dad was a Farmer until 1968 in Rutherglen ON. He owned the property onced owned by Willard Smith, sold to Adoniram, my grandfather and then passed on to my Dad. He also drove the public school bus from at least 1960 until he moved his family to Porcupine, Ontario.

In Porcupine, he began his job as Fourth Class Civil Engineer at the Ontario Hospital there until about 1975 when the hospital closed. He was transferred to the Ontario Hospital in Gravenhurst, where he and Mom lived until his retirement in 1982 when they moved to North Bay. Just before Christmas of 1987, he was diagnosed with Pre-leukemia. In early January, 1988 he was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto and underwent 3 months of chemotherapy. He died of pnemonia and his funeral was held over the Easter weekend in North Bay. His body was interned around May 1st, to Oglestone Corners (Mount Pleasant Cemetery), in Rutherglen (actually in Calvin Twp.).

Dad was a Master Mason with the Mattawa Lodge.

My father was a kind and quiet person. He rarely showed his negative emotions. I love you Dad, and this is all for you.
