  • Notes
    • Phil operated a photographic studio in Mattawa, but closed it and went to work with his father in Blind River in the bush camp. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and in 1947 served in the Korean War for two years, one in action and one in Japan. He was a member of the Army Medical Corps, attached to the 21st Infantry Regiment. Shortly upon his return, Phil was involved in the Young People's Union of St. Andrew's United Church in Mattawa where he participated in amateur theatre.

In 1953, Phil was stationed in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Phil's best man was his best friend Charles deRimsingeur of Toronto and Lloyd Smith and George Richards were the ushers.

A few years after their marriage, they lived in Kentucky and later they spent three years in Hawaii. Phil also served in the Viet Nam war, being stationed in Thailand.

Phil now resides in Lancaster, NY and is a retired Sgt. Major (E-9) US Army.

My mother says that Uncle Phil was known as "Bobby." He graduated from grade 8, then "Senior fourth grade" at 12 years old. He left home and found work on a farm in Mattawa (Charlie Hazelwood) where he did chores etc. Later on he got a job as a bell-hop at the Empire Hotel in North Bay. He had several other jobs but ended up in Toronto working for Christie Browns bakery. Soon he got a job again as a bell-hop at the Royal York Hotel where he met a good friend, Charles de Rimsingeur, who helped him get started in the American Army, which started his army career. He served in Soelle, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Hawaii.

As you already know, your Uncle Phill passed away on Tuesday morning. As is consistent with his humble character, he preferred no "wake" or viewing and opted for a simple Memorial service. That will be held on Friday, Sept 5th from 7:00PM to 8:30PM. There will be desserts provided by the church's Ministry Team after the service. We understand that many of you plan to attend. We would be honored if you chose to do so.
